Moving Right Along

December 19, 2012

Dear Reader,

This Pet Battlin’ Fool is mostly done.  I’ve captured every pet that one can reasonably expect to capture (meaning not the Silithid Hatchling, Minfernal, nor Qiraji Guardling), beaten all the 5.0 pet tamers (Major Payne was aptly named, but the others were mostly 1-shotted), and got my 400 pet acheivement points\s (simultaneously with my 400 pets achievement – nice!).  I still do some daily pet battling and am still leveling a handful of pets to take on the 5.1 Elemental pet bosses, but the large volume of time it was taking up is now mostly free.

So, what now?  I’ve been slowly but steadily gearing up to raid (2 ilevel points away now).  I refused to use LFR throughout Cata, but I think I’ll be stepping in this time, since the heroics are tuned so low.  I haven’t had a wipe in a heroic yet, in fact, which in and of itself is distressing.  I’m working through the dailies a bit at a time; I finally hit honored with Golden Lotus, so I’ve got the third tier of dailies there (joy…), and I’ve been working on my cloud serpent dailies (I forget who I saw recently saying they must be the last person to hit exalted, but no, you’re not).

In fact, the Cloud Serpentites have been bothering me a bit; they have a quest I can’t complete.  I actually love their daily quest structure; they give 3 “normal” quests and 4 that work off your secondary professions.  That rewards people for keeping up with their secondary classes.  And I have.  Paladi not only has all his secondary classes maxed (well he did in Cata;  he hasn’t had a chance since), but he actually is at 600 archaeology already, too, despite the fact he hasn’t left Jade Forest.  This factor weighed heavily on my decision of who to level, you may remember; Paladi’s got it all, baby.  He’s got every pre-panda recipe in the game for all his professions.  He’s the achievement master.  He’s got all the kewl lewtz.  Iambic was a fresh 85 who got dumped afterwards due to the 10×85 challenge.  She didn’t get all his glorious 6+ years played benefits, but she was more fun.

So I thought about leveling her archaeology.  Archaeology was such a drag before Mists.  It was truly terrible, as I’m sure I don’t have to tell any of you.  Still, that Cloud Serpent quest has been lingering there, waiting, unobtainable, a constant reminder of things undone.  The pressure built.

So this past weekend, after netting my two big pet achievements and my two cool pets (Jade Tentacle and Venus), I decided I’d start leveling archaeology.  It’s been “streamlined,” in that you can now level for finding parts beyond just 75.  Additionally, you get 6 finds per dig site, and many more parts per find.  Hallelujah, right?

Wrong.  It still stinks.  At first, I tried to just do it while listening to music.  Then, I tried alt-tabbing while I was flying places and doing other stuff.  Then I tried putting WoW in windowed mode and playing a very light puzzle game (Puzzle Quest) in the background; this has been very efficient at doing long fishing quests for the Anglers since Iambic’s fishing also stinks).  Then I found myself playing PQ and forgetting to move to the next dig site.

So I said the heck with it and just played Puzzle Quest.  It’s pretty bad when any activity gets beaten out by a glorified Bejeweled.

So while archaeology may be better than it was, it’s still terrible, and it’s still a primary  example of Wow’s faults; that you have to do something boring to get to later good stuff.  It’s a game.  It should be fun all the way through, and Mists has done a really good job of livening up leveling with pet battles and some new leveling structures, but ghosts of boredoms past still remain.

Blizz, find a way to make archaeology fun or drop it.

Stubborn (who also has no fishing, first aid, or archaeology, since Paladi got it all)

I also hate Archaeology. Have never brought myself to raise it. I hate fishing, but I raised that far higher due to the fact that at least I could sit in one spot and get through it. Or you know, get fish to sell/cook. Archaeology is just too much of a pain in the neck to me.

Yes, I often just put fishing in windowed mode and go browse the Internet or play a light game while clicking back every 20 or so seconds to catch fish. Too bar arch can’t work that way; I think they’ve reduced it to the bottom of the “almost but not quite fun” pile.

I actually like Archaeology, though more for the discoveries and stories rather than the act of doing it which is rather repetitive and tiresome. The grind of survey survey survey find could no doubt be improved. And maybe have all digsites active, and you can pick which one to play around in rather than having to fly to a new one after six surveys.

Contrast with fishing though, which i still have sitting at about 400. So horrible, I don’t know how anyone does it. At least with archaeology I’m doing something.

Haven’t done anything with pet battles, but I’m getting tired of LFR. It just takes too long. You sit in queue as a dps for 40 minutes and then it just seems to take forever to get through the place. Maybe I’m just past the point where beating on a boss for 8 minutes along with 24 others gives me any enjoyment.

To be fair, I really like that part, too, and I like the little toys that you can come up with. It’s just the mechanical nature that ruins it for me. There’s so much they could have done with it; consider the scrolls in Pandaria; that was a perfect implementation of what archaeology could have been, but wasn’t.

It is no worse than fishing. I know…fishing sucks.

Ah, but with fishing, you can put it in windowed mode, put sound on in background, zoom in so the bobber’s about the only thing on the screen, make the window pretty tiny, and then open another window and so something else. Not so with arch; you’ve got to fly from site to site, move around within the sites, observe the color and direction of the survey machine, and see the actual fragments. It’s much more irritating.

I think Blizzard is extremely sensitive to people complaining of running out of things to do, so the boring, excessively grindey stuff in the game is there specifically for that type of player, who has already spent 200 hours doing everything else in the game, but still wants to keep playing. That’s what archaeology was for me back at the beginning of Cata [I sucked that expansion dry], and I never found it to be too boring, even at three hits per dig site providing 3-5 fragments each, just kind of relaxing and cruisey.

My tolerance for grind is a lot lower today.

That’s actually a pretty solid theory. There has to be something for those people – and my buddy, the contentivore – leveled it WAY before I did when it first came out. Very interesting point!

I like archy. Of course I’m a mage/eng so I can portal anywhere at anytime Makes life so easy

Yes, I leveled a mage/eng on one of my “test” servers that I didn’t end up sticking with and absolutely loved the mobility that went with it. I miss that on other toons.
