Labor Day

September 2, 2013

Dear Reader,

I have today off, so I’m not going to post too terribly much.  Still, I wanted to let you know about a few things.  One, despite some initial misgivings, I’m feeling more comfortable with the guild.  Even if it has some heated debates and some policies I’m not a huge fan of, I’m aware that I’m never going to find a perfect guild, and I’m not willing to work to create one, so I’ll have to find close matches and accept what small differences may exist.

You know, like, be an adult about it.

I don’t want anyone to think I’m blindly ignoring some of the warnings, though.  I think that incident with the loudmouth was pretty isolated, and I’ve bumped into him a few times where he’s been mouthing off, though never so brusquely, and basically caused him to put his foot in his mouth.  The incident in question was rather funny, and I think it may have been labeled by another guildy as the “burn of the century,” so I’ll relate it, but be aware there’s some coarse language and a little nastiness on my part involved.

He was telling a story about how his firemen buddies had “punked” him by loading a bunch of large African-america phalluses into his computer.  He’d apparently gone to the restroom and left his laptop vulnerable, and when he came back, he found a lot of gay porn and penis photos.  He was describing in some detail what he’d seen – in front of two ladies who may or may not have cared; I don’t know – and was then joking that he thought it was pretty “gay” that the other firemen knew where to find those pictures.

I replied, “I’m sure they just looked in your favorites bar.”

He was not amused, and replied something along the lines of “My foot up your ass is going to be in your favorites bar.”

Ah, violence, the first option of the outwitted.

Anyway, if I can destroy him so easily with words, I’m not too concerned about his presence.  Even after that, he was cordial, the next day offering to bring me in to a DS achievement run, so I honestly believe he simply has no concept of audience and will, occasionally, need “the burn of the century.”  I don’t mind fulfilling that role.

That one actual potential problem aside, nothing else’s too dire, so I decided that rather than make myself miserable by leveling again, I’d pony up another 25 bucks and transfer Paladi to be tank.  If there’s such a thing as a vote of confidence on my part, it’s me spending more money.

So enjoy your day off if you have one, and if you don’t, it’s okay.  I like my job and wish I got to see my students today.  Instead, I’ll spend it – ugh – leveling these last 3 levels.

Sincerely,

Stubborn (“Burner of the Century”)

funny that anyone who has familiarity knows exactly who you reference. He does not have a clue about social graces in regards to his language. He speaks in the way he knows and is spoken to, in both his former military service life as well as his current civilian profession. He is a member of a subculture that uses certain language that while some find offensive others don’t and feel its either a “freedom of speech” issue or a “just get over yourself” issue.

Is it right? is it wrong? Honestly, I stopped caring. I realized a long time ago its a fruitless endeavor to try and change someone through a video game from thousands of miles away. all you end up with is frustration, aggravation, and annoyance.

In any guild if someone in particular grates you always speak to the folks in leadership roles. If its pervasive in the guild know that its the culture and you won’t change it. If its one individual, just avoid them.

I came to a similar conclusion as you. I spoke to several people privately about him, and the resounding consensus was that he was a good guy who just shot off at the mouth a lot, and, more importantly, if you called him on it, he’d back down and be apologetic about it. That kind of reassurance about a person’s character goes a long way, and yes, trying to fight against an accepted member of the guild when you’re new is not a great idea.

Since then, there’s really been no more outbursts like that. Occasionally a large group of them talk politics, which is often amusing if also distressing, but that’s how most political conversations are regardless of the forum.
